Sacred Hoju

Heading east through Kyoto streets into the forested hills.

The morning hours in Kyoto were a nice change of pace. Laying in bed, knowing the winter sun was just rising. Air temps required dressing in layers. Crisp and wind chilled. Fueling fast morning commutes. We joined. Quickly tucked into a small cafe for our morning toast and coffee. The vibe was chill. There was a heavy frog theme going on. And despite a few laptops popped here and there. The scene was very subdued. Quiet even. The hiss of steam. Pulling of the espresso shots. Ceramic cups tapping on wood tables. I love this soundtrack of life. Analog. Calm. Human. Walking again. Heading across the Kamo River. Teardrop shaped ornaments on handrails of the bridge. Representing the hoju, a sacred Buddhist wish-fulfilling jewel. Meant to protect this crossing. Purify the area. As rivers are natural highways for spiritual energy. These protect and prevent evil spirits from entering. Today we passed across in peace.
